The “last days” actually refers to the entire time of the church of Christ. What is expected of the church? “But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty.” 2 Timothy 3:1 (English Standard Version)
The Lord’s church is not a last-minute substitute for an earthly kingdom; prophecies in the Old Testament make this clear. “The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” Psalm 118:22 (English Standard Version)
