Cath Bowie is a gamer. To be more specific, she’s into “Fortnite”, a video game which simulates combat situations. DigitalTrends.com labels it “the most popular game in the world”, and Cath would certainly agree. In a story carried by United Press International, she confesses that she plays it every day and has been since 2017.

For that dedication, Cath, a resident of Scotland, has been named by Guinness World Records as the oldest female Fortnite streamer in the world. Video games are typically viewed as a realm of teens and young adults, but this woman stated, “I have never made my age a deterrent.” She enjoys the community she meets while battling with virtual guns and grenades. She certainly breaks the stereotype many have of the gaming world enthusiasts.

Most people have hobbies that they enjoy when they have free time. My experience with video games came many years ago with Pong and Donkey Kong, but I soon lost interest (when I couldn’t win the games). (Interestingly, while writing this a friend sent me a text message with a graphic stating that “My favorite hobby is sitting down” – while holding a TV remote!)

Let me introduce you to another older lady named Anna. We meet her in Luke’s gospel: “Now there was one, Anna, a prophetess … She was of great age … who did not depart from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day” (Luke 2:36,37). Her devotion to the Lord was rewarded by her being one of the first people on earth to meet Jesus when He was still an infant.

Did Anna have no hobbies? Perhaps she was also a seamstress or an excellent cook, but what Scripture records is her love of serving God. Fortnite didn’t exist in her day, but even if it had, I suspect her attention would not have been turned away from the Lord.

Luke tells of another woman in Acts 10. Dorcas used her talents of sewing to make garments for the widows of her village (Acts 10:39). She was greatly loved by those she served, and her untimely death was reversed through the miraculous power Peter had been given as an apostle (Acts 10:36-41). We aren’t told, but it’s a safe assumption to think that her needle became busy again.

Am I trying to say that playing video games is wrong? No, but here’s a higher concept to consider: “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is” (Ephesians 5:15-17). Or, as Titus 3:1 teaches, “Remind them … to be ready for every good work.” There is so much good that we can do in the name of Christ. Let’s work hard to not be distracted by the trivial.

Come to the light God offers!  Study His word, the Bible.  Worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24).  Get in touch with us if you’d like to discuss these ideas further.
