Morning Sunshine

This Sunday is when most in the U.S. revert to Eastern Standard Time and leave Daylight Saving Time behind. Twice a year we change our clocks and expect our body clocks to catch up. Even though “Fall Back” means an extra hour of sleep for a night, many of us struggle for days as we acclimate to the new regimen. The clock may say it’s time to get up, but our body clock says, “No!”

An article carried by the Associated Press earlier this week gives some advice on how to make the adjustment. Author Lauran Neergaard wrote, “But sunshine in the morning is critical to helping reset your circadian rhythm for healthful sleep. If you can’t get outdoors, sit by windows.”

Though we don’t fully realize it, the amount of sunlight we are exposed to has an effect on us. Some experience SADS (Seasonal Affective Disorder Syndrome) during the winter months. Having less sunshine in our lives can have serious consequences.

You know, of course, where this “LightGrams” article is headed: Just as our physical bodies need more exposure to sunshine to help with body clock transitions, so our souls need more exposure to the light of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. That exposure makes an enormous difference!

John opened his gospel with this truth: “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it” (John 1:4,5). Normally, the appearance of light in a dark place is celebrated. But not so with the appearance of Jesus: “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil” (John 3:19). Many choose to remain in darkness!

The apostle Paul spoke about the importance of coming to the Light: “For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). Instead of refusing the Light, we should welcome it. We should choose to come to the Light every day.

The greatest time change of all human history still lies ahead. An old hymn proclaimed this truth: “When the trumpet of the Lord shall sound and time shall be no more …” Leaving a time-bound earth for an eternity which knows no time sounds intimidating. But by coming to the Son for daily exposure to His light and teachings, we’ll be ready when that transition happens.

Hear again the words of Jesus: “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life” (John 8:12). Have you had your daily exposure to the Son?

Come to the light God offers!  Study His word, the Bible.  Worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24).  Get in touch with us if you’d like to discuss these ideas further.
