Milton Berle was a trailblazer in television, starring as a comedian in the days of black and white TV. But he also was somewhat of a philosopher as he once pondered this question: “If evolution really works, how come mothers only have two hands?” That’s an excellent question!
A mother in Florida recently made headlines when she won a video game tournament in Orlando. That in itself isn’t surprising but now consider that she won the tournament while holding her daughter who was only five days old. The child had to be taken by Cesarean section as a rare condition was threatening to cause the mother’s uterus to rupture. Despite the recent surgery and childbirth, this mother, identified only as “LegiOn”, defeated other contestants at the game Mortal Kombat.
I had conflicting thoughts when I first read this, such as, “Where are your priorities?” and “Why are you subjecting your child at such an early age to a violent video game. I then read that LegiOn had nearly died during two pregnancies, including the most recent one. Her earlier daughter died after living only 11 days because of a rare condition. LegiOn is using her newfound fame to advocate for NORD, National Organization for Rare Disorders. She also urges mothers to care for their children while continuing to do things they love (like, in her case, video games).
God’s word teaches honor to be shown to our parents. One of the Ten Commandments given to Israel stated, “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12). Proverbs 30:17 states, “The eye that mocks his father, and scorns obedience to his mother, the ravens of the valley will pluck it out, and the young eagles will eat it.” Is there any ambiguity in those verses? Children are to honor their mothers.
Proverbs 31 has an extended tribute to the “virtuous wife”. Some statements point to her role as a mother. “She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household …” (v. 15). “… her lamp does not go out by night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle” (vv. 18,19). “She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet” (v. 21). “She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness” (v. 27). The woman described by King Lemuel is definitely a multitasker!
Maybe instead of judging some mothers because of things we don’t understand we should honor them for obvious signs of devotion to their children. LegiOn didn’t leave her child at home, nor was the newborn neglected in any way. During her time in the spotlight, LegiOn pointed to a worthy cause that is not well known. Yes, God’s word is always correct. Multitasking moms deserve honor.
Come to the light God offers! Study His word, the Bible. Worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24). Get in touch with us if you’d like to discuss these ideas further.
