More Than Good Luck

I spent a lot of time in my grandmother’s yard in my early years. She lived across the road from our house, and she had a large front yard. One of my favorite activities was looking for a four-leaf clover. This small green plant usually has only three leaves, but now and then you can find one with four. Finding a four-leaf clover is supposedly a sign of good luck to come.

The city of Dublin, Ohio recently hosted an event which may bring them “luck” in being recognized as a world record holder. On March 18 they gathered more than 1,050 people, all clad in bright green ponchos, and formed a human shamrock (a shamrock is a type of clover). Photographed from above, the mass of people huddled together appears to be a large four-leaf clover.

The previous record for such a feat was 815 people in Dublin, Ireland in 2013. Pulling off such a stunt requires planning and cooperation, of course. That many people don’t just naturally come together wearing ponchos of the same color, and they don’t just happen to stand in a formation that resembles a clover. In other words, this was a planned event and people made it happen.

The connection between four-leaf clovers and luck is suspect (I don’t recall any lucky things happening after finding such a shamrock). But if we can convince a number of people to form the shape of Jesus Christ, good things will definitely happen!

In Galatians 4:19, Paul wrote about his desire for Christians: “My little children, for whom I labor in birth again until Christ is formed in you.” Like a mother bearing a child for whom she has great hopes, Paul felt hope for these disciples in Galatia, praying they would display the image of Christ.

Can everyday people take on the image of Christ? 2 Corinthians 3:18 says so: “But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory …” We don’t start out looking like Jesus, but gazing into God’s mirror (i.e., the Bible) will bring about, over time, a transformation. We actually begin to look like Christ!

But will the world see this transformed image that Christians bear? One key to this is found in the words of Jesus in John 17:20,21: “I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word, that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.”

Here’s Jesus’ point: When Christians grow into a united body by overlooking external factors like race, ethnic backgrounds, economic factors, etc., the world will take notice. They will see that the church looks different. It looks like – Jesus! And that is just the way Jesus planned it.

Unity in Jesus Christ – that’s more certain that finding a lucky shamrock!

Come to the light God offers!  Study His word, the Bible.  Worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:24).  Get in touch with us if you’d like to discuss these ideas further.
